MABC Supports Provincial Announcement of Site C

December 16, 2014

The Mining Association of B.C. supports the B.C. Government’s announcement of the approval of the Site C Clean Energy Project
(Site C).

The mining industry in B.C. anticipates growth in the industry in the years ahead and, like all industrial users, the industry will need more power as it continues to grow and drive the economy, creating jobs and economic prosperity in all regions of the province.

The government affirmed that Site C is the most affordable project to meet the province’s clean energy needs and will continue to provide low rates in the future.  “Electricity is a major cost input in the mining industry and the reliability of electricity is critical to productivity at the mine site,” said Karina Briño, President and CEO of the Mining Association of BC.   “For this reason, the mining industry’s primary focus in electricity policy is on the provision of accessible, reliable and competitively-priced line power.  Government projects and policies that meet this focus are welcomed.”

The B.C. mining industry had confidence that B.C. Hydro and the government would engage in a high level of due diligence in making a decision regarding Site C.  “We appreciate their commitment to the highest standards of consultation and engagement, including their continued commitment to working with First Nations towards economic development and shared prosperity,” continued Briño.

A long-term coordinated approach to energy policy is key to effective natural resource development in B.C. and Site C is a positive step in this direction.
