MABC Congratulates Teck’s Elkview Operations on Receiving TSM Leadership Award

November 29, 2013

SPARWOOD, BC – On November 28, 2013 the Mining Association of BC (MABC) joined Teck employees, members of the local community and government officials in Sparwood, BC,  as the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) presented Teck’s Elkview Operations with the Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Leadership Award.  Teck’s Elkview Operations are joining only two other companies with a mine site to receive this honour in TSMs ten-year history.

TSM is a Mining Association of Canada initiative that was launched in 2004 and provides a set of guiding principles and performance elements to govern key activities of companies in all sectors of the mining and mineral processing industry.  To be eligible for the award companies must have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the TSM focus areas, including environmental footprint, communities and people, and energy efficiency.

MABC President and CEO, Karina Briño congratulated Teck’s Elkview Operations, “This award is something our entire industry can be proud of. Teck’s Elkview Operations are an example of how the BC mining industry is a world leader in sustainable development”.   “The Toward Sustainable Mining initiative” Briño continued, “is indicative of our commitment to a responsible and responsive mining and mineral processing industry and we look forward to continuing to work with the Mining Association of Canada to grow the initiative”.

David Ewing, Vice President Environment and Technical Affairs for the Mining Association of BC attended the reception for the presentation of the award.  “It is clear how Teck's efforts in engaging the community, the Ktunaxa First Nation and the local government has resulted in real, long lasting benefits to the region.  It is indicative of how mining builds communities”, Ewing noted.

Teck’s Elkview Operations is the company’s second largest mine, with more than 1,000 full-time employees. It is located just east of Sparwood in southeastern BC and produces high-quality steel-making coal. The current annual production capacities of the mine and preparation plant (on a 100% basis) are approximately 6.5 million and 6.5 million tonnes of steelmaking coal, respectively.
