Senior Environment Coordinator (Temporary)

Reporting to the Superintendent, Environment, the Senior Environment Coordinator is responsible for the planning, supervision and implementation of environmental activities and initiatives at site.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Be accountable for health and safety of environment, employees and contractors on site
  • Supervise a team of professionals who are responsible for delivery of compliance and implementing best management practices and programs
  • Ensure proper collection, management and reporting of site data as per standardized procedures, meet QA/QC standards, audit data, and report operational data for internal and external purposes
  • Participate in regulatory and internal compliance audits, inspections and investigations
  • Obtain minor operational permits and permit amendments required to maintain operations in accordance with guidance from the Business Unit (BU) Regulatory Approvals group
  • Support development of and implement site-specific environmental awareness programs, and provide practical mentorship and assistance to departments across the site to further a culture of sustainability
  • Support the implementation and integration of environmental requirements into site operational practices
  • Respond to and report environmental incidents and emergencies as set out in emergency response plans and procedural documents, in close cooperation with or under direction of the BU Environment and Social Responsibility team and corporate legal counsel
  • Support completion of site environmental component sustainability bonus program
  • Support development of appropriate processes, procedures and best management practices and implement to ensure the operation maintains compliance with all environmental operating permits, including management of the Environmental Management System under ISO 14001
  • Ensure sustainable and compliant waste management at site
  • Meet operational regulatory requirements associated with reclamation and closure under the guidance of the BU Biodiversity and Closure group
  • Work interactively with other environmental senior coordinators, as well as the BU Environment and Social Responsibility team and corporate legal counsel
  • Remain current on environmental issues that may impact Teck’s social and regulatory license to operate

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Forestry, Agriculture or a related field
  • Six to eight years of related experience in an environmental role
  • Possess or eligible to apply for a professional designation such as P. Biol., P. Eng., RPF, or related designation
  • Previous mining experience in environmental management is considered a significant asset
  • Strong ability to function collaboratively with regulators, First Nations, and other communities of interest, and with other departments and units within the business
  • Technical knowledge of federal and provincial compliance practices and regulations related to resource development
  • Strong project management experience with a track record that includes management and technical direction of environmental projects
  • Expertise in maintaining Environmental Management Systems. Strong experience in environmental data management and reporting, including database systems
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both formal and informal settings
  • Strong skills in leading a team and the ability to excel in a technical team environment
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision making abilities
  • Ability to work productively with nominal supervision
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced environment including leading change and making recommendations to management
