Reporting to the Vice President Planning and Development, Coal, the Operating Excellence Specialist is responsible for teaming with Planning and Development (P&D) Group leaders to advance sustainable Continuous Improvement (CI) within the Group.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Facilitate idea generation/prioritization and aid in implementation with the relevant communication and change management components
  • Support the P&D Group in making the changes necessary to drive sustainable continuous improvement in their areas
  • Engage with relevant personnel and build strong relationships within the Planning and Development Group
  • Use CI methodologies to identify business value drivers, constraints and improvement ideas.
  • Support a structured process for scoping, implementing, prioritizing and tracking improvement ideas through to sustainability.  This includes assistance in developing business cases and challenging the value of initiatives
  • Provide support to a variety of employees and facilitate change through the evaluation, implementation and sustaining phases of ideas
  • Facilitate the presentation and selling of improvement ideas to relevant Business Unit (BU) Support and Site personnel based on data analyses
  • Provide support to the P&D Group through analyses and reporting while collaborating within the departments to improve CI and change management process
  • Work collaboratively with the Coal Sites/Support Groups and if required, Corporate, in the assessment, implementation and follow up on business improvement ideas


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining, Maintenance/Reliability or Processing Engineering, Business/Finance, and/or significant supervisory experience with a successful track record of driving change in an industrial setting
  • Minimum five years of experience in an industrial environment with exposure to Lean/Six Sigma or other proven continuous improvement methodologies. Experience in the resources sector preferred
  • Strong facilitation skills to enable participative discussions and learning among department members
  • Results focused, able to prioritize and be aware of the limitations of multi-tasking
  • Capable of maintaining a positive attitude when dealing with challenges, conflicting opinions and delayed timelines
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and follow up on key deliverables
  • Strong team player with ability to work independently
  • Experience with change management, workflow planning for self, others and groups
  • Understands what delays execution in a business environment and has experience managing around these roadblocks
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills
  • Proficiency with developing analytical models on spreadsheets, and developing effective presentations
