Reporting to the Mine Engineering Manager, the Mine Engineer is primarily responsible for mine planning, design and engineering support for the Frontier Oil Sands Mine Project and Teck’s partnership role in the Fort Hills Mine and its other oil sands interests.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Complete open pit mine planning and design work, including:
    • Pit shell, waste dump, tailings containment, and reclamation stockpile designs
    • Opening cut location analyses
    • Mine progression sequence development and optimization
    • Develop mine schedules and material balances
    • Equipment selection and productivity studies
    • Develop haulage routes and profiles to determine and optimize fleet sizing
    • Create mine status maps
  • Complete optimization and trade-off studies
  • Oversee contractors to complete mine planning studies and designs including:
    • Early mine development
    • Mine water management
    • Reclamation scheduling
    • Closure landscapes and drainage systems
    • Mine cost analysis
  • Work closely with Geology, Process and Environmental groups to optimize plans
  • Support the Frontier regulatory application and permitting process
  • Support Teck’s participation in Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA)
  • Provide planning input and field support for drilling programs
  • Perform other duties as required


  • Bachelor of Science in Mine Engineering, or equivalent, and eligibility for membership in APEGA
  • Two years open pit mining experience preferable; oil sands experience an asset
  • Advanced computer application skills using MineSight mine planning software, AutoCAD, and Microsoft applications; a working knowledge of Muck 3D and 3D-Dig would be beneficial
  • Motivated self-starter able to manage several projects simultaneously
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Expectation and willingness to relocate to another Teck project or operation in two to three years
