Reporting to the Manager, Social Responsibility, the Lead, Community Economic Development, is an integral part of the Social Responsibility Team and is primarily responsible for Indigenous business development and supporting Indigenous employment at Teck’s coal operations. In addition, this role will assist Indigenous communities to establish economic development plans, community-based or individual-run businesses, and develop projects primarily related to those communities’ successful participation in the relevant agreement.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Participate in the management of social risk as an active part of the Social Responsibility team, work closely with the Materials group and other site-based operations departments to manage potential business risk related to Indigenous business development
  • Support engagement with Indigenous Communities, Teck Coal sites and off-site departments and support sustainable Indigenous community economic development
  • Serve as the main contact internally and externally for Indigenous procurement opportunities and business development, as well as to coordinate employment, training and contracting
  • Participate in relevant agreement working groups or committees related to procurement, employment and business development
  • Work with Coal Human Resources to develop and execute a strategy to promote awareness of the mining industry and opportunities with relevant Indigenous communities in areas where Teck operates
  • Assist with the implementation of various agreement-related contracting and sub-contracting processes in alignment with Teck practices and legal requirements


  • Degree in Business Administration or Marketing or relevant Economic Development experience and accreditation or related experience and credentials
  • Minimum 10 years of experience working with Indigenous communities, with experience in Indigenous business development, or work as an Economic Development Officer strongly preferred
  • Experience in mining or other resource development industry is an asset
  • Strong personal computer and business solutions software skills
  • Excellent communication, presentation and relationship management skills for interacting with Indigenous citizens, businesses, internal support personnel and management, and for educating internal clients
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience handling sensitive, confidential issues and contractual details
  • Experience with dealing with suppliers, subcontractors, internal contract managers, and analyzing contracting terms and conditions
  • Valid driver’s license (minimum BC Class 7N or equivalent)
