Geotechnical Engineer or Engineer-in-Training

Reporting to the Senior Engineer, Geotechnical, the Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for the short-term management of geotechnical structures, hazards and inspections, as well as providing oversight and support for short-term mine planning. The role is expected to be 60% office and 40% field based.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Ensure site geotechnical risks are identified and documented and Teck policies and procedures are followed
  • Assist in completing slope stability analyses, rock slope kinematic analyses, bench-face reliability reviews and spoil optimization studies
  • Conduct and document geotechnical field inspections and necessary reports (pits and spoils) as required for site, consulting and regulatory inspections
  • Assist with planning and operations of pit and dumps including spoil management procedures, allowable dumping rates, Trigger Action Response Plans and final wall cleanup
  • Assist in review and analysis of pit and spoil designs and modifications
  • Assist in geotechnical engineering studies for pit slopes, spoils, tailings facilities and water structures
  • Oversee site geotechnical monitoring programs, including tracking ground movement, provide support for analysis to optimize mine designs and implement continuous improvement measures
  • Complete field mapping and structure reconciliation
  • Provide geotechnical support for the tailings and tunnel facilities
  • Provide geotechnical input to minimize safety and business risks, and to strive for continuous improvement
  • Work with the engineer of record to continuously improve and implement the quality assurance and control, construction monitoring and dam surveillance programs
  • Participate in Teck’s growing geotechnical community of practice; liaise with other geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists across Teck Resources


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering with a specialization in Geological, Geotechnical, Mining and/or Civil Engineering
  • Registered, or eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist with EGBC is required
  • One to five years of experience in open pit mining with exposure to geotechnical data analysis, site investigations, project evaluation and management for mining sector clients is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills both written and oral
  • Advanced analytical, problem solving, risk analysis and decision making abilities
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to multi-task and excel in a fast paced environment of change
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team based environment
