Geotechnical Engineer or Engineer-in-Training

Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer Supervisor, the Geotechnical Engineer or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) will assist with supporting and improving the site geotechnical program. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with the Engineering and site departments towards the safe operation, surveillance, optimization, and corporate and legal compliance of our operating open pits, waste rock dumps and coal stockpiles.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Perform routine Geotechnical inspections of mine site facilities including pit slopes and waste rock dumps, report on the inspections, and provide recommendations to the Engineering and Mine Operations groups
  • Coordinate and manage site geotechnical investigation and mapping programs
  • Develop systems for the efficient collection, analysis and response to geotechnical data
  • Liaise with site departments and geotechnical consultants on geotechnical projects, hazard identification, mitigation strategies, and geotechnical awareness training to ensure mining activities progress safely and in accordance with sound geotechnical engineering principles
  • Support site Geotechnical monitoring programs, provide support for analysis and design, and implement continuous improvement measures
  • Apply Geotechnical expertise to rock slopes, waste rock dumps, and soil slopes and foundations
  • Assist with reviewing short and long range plans for Geotechnical hazards, data gaps and design deficiencies
  • Help with maintaining and updating mine site standard practices and procedures on Geotechnical matters
  • Work in compliance with all internal governance and regulatory requirements
  • Perform other tasks as required or as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geological or Mining Engineering or in a related discipline is required
  • Professional Engineering designation or eligibility is an asset
  • Minimum one to two years of experience, preferably in a mining environment, with exposure to geotechnical data collection, site investigations, project management, geotechnical analyses and risk management
  • Knowledge of geotechnical, drafting and modelling software is preferred (e.g. Slide, Dips, MineSight)
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite®
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to multi-task
  • Exceptional communication (both written and oral), organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to excel in a team based environment
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills are essential
