Drill and Blast Lead

Reporting to the Senior Supervisor, Business Improvement, the Drill and Blast Lead is responsible for enhancing existing process through the optimization of operational processes, and application of best practices and providing technical support to Teck Coal’s drill and blasting programs. The expectation of the Drill and Blast lead is to support the ongoing continuous improvement of Drill and Blast through the application of external and internal knowledge. The role will also involve the standardization of operating and safety practices while developing and auditing leading indicators to bench mark inter-site comparisons.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Proactively support drilling and blasting operations to increase operational safety, effectiveness and efficiency
  • Develop and maintain operation documentation around standardized processes involving drilling and blasting
  • Plan, coordinate and communicate all drill and blast system changes to all stakeholders
  • Assist in the development and maintenance planning and reporting systems, including management dashboard and key performance indicators
  • Optimize and apply leading/best practices in the drilling and blasting business to reduce overall operational costs and to drive continuous improvement
  • Develop auditing and reporting processes to monitor and evaluate site performance and practices against established best practices
  • Develop and maintain issues log to record, action and resolve
  • Manage and report any significant deviation from short term, annual or forecasted operational plans to relevant internal stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with site personnel
  • Participate in relevant incident reviews relating to drill and blast and engage technical experts as required. 
  • Audit Drill and Blast operating practices and implement strategies that improve both the performance of drilling and blasting activities and the actions of individuals
  • Perform other responsibilities as required or as assigned


  • Seven to ten years work experience in mining operations roles with significant experience and knowledge in drilling and blasting
  • Minimum five years supervisory experience within large open pit mining operation
  • Computer skills and experience with the Microsoft Office Suite®, especially Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Be self-motivated and function at high performance level with minimal supervision in both office environment and active mining environments
  • Familiar with the day-to-day Drill and Blast field operations in surface mining as well as day-to-day routine pit operations
  • Familiarity with Teck Coal’s drilling and blasting management practices, and pit operations is an asset
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, proven interpersonal skills and change management skills are required
  • Possess strong skills in written and oral communication, practical problem-solving and continuous improvement experience.
