Automation Specialist – Water Quality Management

Reporting to the Senior Engineer Supervisor, Process, the Automation Specialist is responsible for implementing and supporting process control, monitoring, and reporting systems for Teck Coal Water Operations. Water Operations’ goal is to operate active water treatment facility (AWTF), saturated rock fill (SRF) and calcite operations efficiently as part of Teck’s overall commitment to meet the requirements of Environmental Management Act (EMA) permit 107517 and the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan. Currently operating the West Line Creek AWTF, Elkview SRF and Greenhills Calcite skid, by 2021 Water Operations will commission and operate at least two large facilities, increasing volume treated capacity by 70%. The successful candidate will be responsible for support and improving the existing process control systems and be Water Operations’ representative on Project and the Digital Operations team. This position may require travel 10-25% of the time to work with suppliers on integrating their systems into Teck Coal requirements.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Ability to work as a part of a highly collaborative team with a focus on delivering value and promoting sharing of best practices across operations
  • Develop and maintain documentation of standards and best practices for installation, commissioning, and maintenance of process control technologies that will be the basis for new installations
  • Guide control system development and integration into Teck systems for new projects, ensuring uniformity across suppliers and operations
  • Enhance and support existing processing systems at Teck Coal’s Water Operations
  • Monitor for system problems and provide after-hours emergency support
  • Install and upgrade systems and as required
  • Adhere to Information Systems and Technology change control policies and procedures
  • Perform other responsibilities as the Water Operations group matures


  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering with an automation focus or a related discipline or equivalent experience or certification with at least 4 years of experience
  • Experience integrating, maintaining and installing Industrial Control Systems in industrial and project settings
  • Knowledge of general computer controls related to operations, information security and change management of systems software, application source code, network, and system database technologies
  • Experience with Rockwell, Wonderware, Schneider or OSIsoft is an asset
  • Experience with process control and automation technologies such as: HMI design, PLC programming, Data Historians, and control networks
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows® desktop and server Operating Systems, virtualization, Active Directory and computer networking fundamentals
  • Highly motivated individual that is able to work independently to achieve high quality outcomes in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills
  • Ability to make decisions and act as a strong cross-functional team participant with a collaborative approach to problem solving
  • Excellent people and customer service skills and ability to work well with people at all levels both internal and external to the organization
  • Strong process documentation and reporting capabilities
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills as well as the ability to prioritize
  • Detail and action oriented, but also able to think strategically delivering a value added service strategy
