MABC Climate Action — Greenhouse Gas Task Force
MABC established a BC Mining Industry Climate Action Task Force to address the BC government’s climate initiatives including the carbon tax and the impending “cap & trade” system. For both economic and environmental reasons, the BC mining and smelting industry has progressively improved efficiencies and reduced emissions at many operations over the last 20 years. The Task Force met with the Premier in January 2008 and is partnering with government. MABC and its members want to meet GHG emission reduction goals while growing a sustainable mining and smelting industry. To be globally competitive, BC government policies and regulations must be competitive, clear, predictable and relevant to the public and industry alike.
The MABC led, Mining Climate Action Task Force, has been meeting regularly since November 2007 and has completed an industry wide survey, a workshop led by Levelton Engineering and a report on existing and pending regulations. In early 2008, as a follow-up to the meetingwith the Premier, the task force has formed a joint committee with government representatives to help develop a greenhouse gas reduction action plan based on sound data that will not stifle economic development and will enable a growing mining industry to prosper.
