Mining Week 2015 has come to a close and we would like to say Thank You for Celebrating with us!  There were 21 events across the province this year; from Smithers to Sparwood, Prince George and Kamloops, British Columbians came together in virtually every corner of the province to celebrate our dynamic industry.

In Vancouver we hosted the first ever sold out Opening Gala, where Minister Bennett officially declared BC Mining Week and kicked off the series of events that followed.  More than 150 joined us at the Five Sails as we honoured John McManus as the Mining Person of the Year.

Teck Celebrity Pie Throw Raises $1.1 Million for Mining for Miracles

On Thursday, May 7th hundreds coalesced outside the Vancouver Art Gallery for the annual Teck Celebrity Pie Throw.  This year the Pie Throw raised an astounding $1,066,184 in support of Mining for Miracles and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The afternoon was, as always, wildly fun, lighthearted but at its core focused on the very important initiative of raising funds to support BC’s sick kids.  This year 100% of the funds raised are dedicated to opening a new CAUSES clinic at the BC Children’s Hospital which will use one genetic test to help diagnose kids with rare diseases, saving time, money, travel and stress on the families by getting to a diagnoses and treatment faster.

Karina Briño was once again paired up to go against Gavin Dirom and although Karina’s final total of $18,200 raised overcame Gavin’s $14,000, a little surprise was in store!

Mining Day at the Legislature 2015

March 27, 2015

A number of Mining Day at the Legislature delegates outside the steps to the legislative buildings.

On Tuesday, March 24, 67 senior mining executives, mining suppliers and MABC partners arrived in Victoria for Mining Day at the Legislature.  I am very pleased to say that the day was received by participants and government as an unqualified success.

Last year in February, we hosted our inaugural Mining Day at the Legislature as a team.   We brought 48 mining representatives and had 48 meetings with elected and senior government officials.  Our objective was to leave a good impression and be invited back.

Having met our goal, this year we aimed to grow the event beyond our initial success.   I am happy to report that with 67 delegates, and 60 meetings with 74 government representatives, we executed what has been described as one of the largest coordinated lobby days in the province.

January 21, 2015 – Prince George, BC –Mining for Miracles will help families solve challenges related to diagnosing rare medical conditions in pediatric patients with a new funding initiative for BC Children’s Hospital, announced today during the 2015 Natural Resources Forum in Prince George, BC. In 2015 and 2016, Mining for Miracles will raise $3 million through BC Children’s Hospital Foundation to support the development of the CAUSES Clinic. Premier Christy Clark joined the BC mining industry representatives to launch the initiative.

"BC’s mining industry has raised more than $23 million for BC Children's Hospital through this campaign,” said Premier Clark. “Mining for Miracles is a clear example of how our resource sector benefits communities right across British Columbia."

The new CAUSES Clinic will provide diagnostic DNA testing to support the accurate and efficient diagnosis of rare genetic diseases in children who would otherwise require numerous tests or might not be diagnosed at all. The CAUSES Clinic will also provide families with genetic counselling, clinical interpretation of complex testing results, and personalized recommendations for treatment.

MABC Visits Copper Mountain

August 1, 2014
By cailey

MABC team at Copper Mountain Mine (Karina Briño, Maureen McLaren, Angela Waterman, Alec Morrison, Cailey Murphy, Bryan Cox, Michelle Donnelly, Jan Albert, Aida Carneiro).

On July 17th the MABC team loaded onto a bus bound for the Copper Mountain Mine just outside of Princeton BC.  The site visit was a great opportunity for the entire MABC staff to spend the afternoon on an operating mine site.  The drive to Princeton from Vancouver is approximately 3.5 hours and the landscape is varied along Highway 3, passing a mix of idle tourists in RVs and yellow Arrow Transport trucks hauling BC goods to market.

Copper Mountain is an open pit copper mine with gold and silver secondary metals and is breathtakingly set in the foothills of the Similkameen Valley, employing more than 400 local residents, primarily from Princeton and the surrounding areas.

We started our tour at the edge of Pit 3 which was developed on top of the historical underground mine.

Copper Mountain is what is called a brownfield mine, built on the site of an earlier mining operation.  Copper mineralization was first discovered on the property in 1874 and in 1925 Granby Consolidated Mining Smelting and Power began extracting copper from an underground operation.
